2014-2-1 Dunes of Nude 107 - Final 2-26-2014 1000
Vancouver Photo Workshops proudly announces this public lecture and presentation with black and white fine-art photographer Cole Thompson.

Cole’s presentation will revolve around images from his portfolios and is interspersed with some of the things he has learned about Vision, listening to himself, the role of equipment, the rules of photography and etc.

For Cole ‘…color records the image, but black and white captures the feelings that lie beneath the surface.’

Following his lecture, we will open the floor to any questions you might have and Cole will be giving away three of his prints.

Free and open to the public

Renowned black and white fine art photographer Cole Thompson will be giving the Palo Alto Camera Club’s Annual Photographic Arts Lecture for 2012.  This is a presentation on why Cole loves black and white and why you might consider it.  During this presentation, he will share a number of his unconventional, thought-provokingphilosophies as well as some tips and techniques.  He will also show a number of his portfolios, including works in progress.

This event will be held at the Palo Alto Children’s Theater (1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA 94301) at 7:30pm. It is free and open to the public.

About Cole Thompson

At 14 years of age, I knew that I was destined to be a fine art photographer. While living in Rochester, NY, I stumbled across an old building associated with George Eastman, which led to my reading of his biography. Before I even completed the book, I knew that I was going to be a photographer and for the next 10 years, photography was my complete existence. If I wasn’t taking pictures or in the darkroom, I would spend countless hours looking at every book and image I could find. There was nothing in my life except photography.

Even at this early age I found myself drawn to a particular style of image, one that would literally cause a physical reaction in me. They were dark images created by Adams, Weston, Bullock and others. I knew that I was destined to create such images.

I am often asked, “Why black and white?” I think it’s because I grew up in a black-and-white world. Television, movies and the news were all in black and white. My heroes were in black and white and even the nation was segregated into black and white.  My images are an extension of the world in which I grew up.

Cole’s website is www.colethompsonphotography.com and his blog can be found atwww.photographyblackwhite.com.

IMPORTANT:  Because of limited seating in the theater, we are requiring all who wish to attend to register well in advance through the Eventbrite process below. Let’s Try These Downloads Again!

DropBox has suspended my account for too much activity (I thought that’s what Dropbox was all about?)

So, here are the files on Microsoft’s Skydrive.  I apologize for the problems due to my lack of expertise in this area!

PowerPoint Presentation Now Available

A number of people had asked that I record my presentation to Denver’s South West Photo Club last evening.  Unfortunately we did not have those facilities available to us, but what I can offer is my PowerPoint presentation and the handout that details my Workflow.  You can download those here:

PowerPoint Presentation on “Why Black and White?” (118 mb)

Handout on my Workflow (Word Doc)

Please note that on the PowerPoint presentation I do have notes available if you view it in the editing mode.

Regarding the Workflow handout; if you’re under the impression that I’m some sort of Photoshop wizard then you certainly will be disappointed!  I tell people that I use about 1% of Photoshop’s features and use that 1% incorrectly.  Truth!

If after reading the presentation you have any questions, please feel free to email me at Cole@ColeThompsonPhotography.com

My thanks to Denver’s South West Photo Club, I was given a very warm welcome!
