Cole, what a marvelous interview and outstanding collection of your work. I have bookmarked this - and will keep it that way until I have followed and read all of the hyperlinks. It's like a master class in black and white photography. Than you for sharing so much of your creative process.

An excellent interview, with penetrating questions; a print out keeper, actually.

The part that resonated most with me dealt with "the vision thing"; how one develops his or her own vision and how not to make copycat images. That is, how to find your own voice.

You set out 4 part process that you followed, but things like "photographic celibacy" just don't work for me. In fact, I get inspiration from work like yours, for example, but I don't want my piers and clouds and bridges and buildings to look like yours or anybody's. It's true: imitation is suicide. But it's hard. And I fully agree the process is not a destination, but more about the journey.

As one currently struggling with that, I've concluded everyone has to find their own process, their own unique path up the mountain. That said, I think we can learn about that process from others who have already blazed their own unique trail, like yourself, very much like the earlier art apprenticeships the old masters experienced while finding their own voice.

I think expanding on this process in a future blog would be terrific, as this is a topic to which you have given meaningful thought.

So far in my own thinking, I've found that trial and error and putting lot of miles on your camera seems to help a lot for inching oneself up the mountain.

Again, a great interview.

A truly enlightening interview full of passion, Cole.
I feel we both share the same attitude and beliefs when it comes to photography, i too used to follow my heroes in photography, but all that has passed me by now, even though i've only been seriously interested in the last 3 years. I now photograph for me, and me alone. I follow my heart and my passions, even though many others are doing similar work.
I've won an award, had worked published, as you, although i have never had an exhibition, but that is in the pipeline.

I'm looking at new projects, and a new direction, but always in Black and White, as you.

Your thoughts, as well as your photography are always an inspiration, and i thank you for that, and hope one day that you will return to Europe.

All the best
